Esperance Community Arts is creating a sense of connection and belonging amongst young people in the community with the support of Southern Ports.
The inclusive community arts organisation was awarded funding in the second round of 2024-2025 Southern Ports Community Investment Program to run 16 Summer School workshops throughout January.
Southern Ports Acting Regional Manager – Esperance Greg Solly said arts programs are an important way to build a greater sense of belonging in the community.
“It’s important to us to create strong regional communities and fostering a sense of belonging goes a long way to doing that,” Mr Solly said.
“Esperance Community Arts gives children, their parents and young adults the opportunity to access arts classes they wouldn’t normally have access to.
“They allow members of our community to tap into their creative side in a fun, social and collaborative setting that has benefits beyond the duration of the workshop.”
The Summer School program has been very popular throughout January, with participants ranging from six-years-old all the way through to adults taking part in four different targeted sets of workshops.
Esperance Community Arts Partnerships and Programs Coordinator Tracy Hill said often financial capacity excludes people from accessing arts programs.
“Through our partnerships we have been able to open our program up to a wider group this year,” Ms Hill said.
“It’s been fantastic to see the positive impact it’s having on our participants who are all engaged partly because we’ve been able to access new resources through the support of Southern Ports – including hiring equipment for our very popular stop-motion workshop.
“Under the guidance of local artists we’ve created some very professional looking films with the equipment.”
Esperance Community Arts was one of the 17 successful Goldfields-Esperance applicants sharing more than $54,000 in round two of the 2024-25 Southern Ports Community Investment Program.
Across its three regions more than $125,000 was awarded to 43 community groups and not-for-profit organisation’s during the round.
Applications for the next round of Southern Ports Community Investment Program are open until 7 March.
