Finalised designs for the transformation of the Port of Albany Pilot Station into a vibrant precinct have been revealed by Minister for Ports Stephen Dawson MLC.

The designs are centred around the repurposing of the of heritage listed Pilot Crew and Coxswain Quarter buildings, and have been developed by Southern Ports working in conjunction with Albany-based H+H Architects.

Southern Ports Chief Executive Officer Keith Wilks said visualising how the historic site overlooking King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour will be revitalised was an important step in the $8.3 million project.

“We’re incredibly proud to have the opportunity to deliver enduring value in our regions through this project,” Mr Wilks said.

“The Port of Albany Pilot Station played an important role in the development of Albany and its port over the last two centuries.

“This reimaging of the site from an underutilised space into something for the whole community is a chance to celebrate that historic connection in an amazing setting.”

The plans will breathe new life to the heritage buildings and surrounds, adding a playground, landscaping, bike facilities and other amenities. Allowance for mobile catering facilities such as a coffee van have also been made.

Minister for Ports Stephen Dawson MLC said the detailed designs stayed true to Southern Ports’ original concepts to create a recreational space while sharing the Port of Albany’s unique story.

"Plans to transform the historic Port of Albany Pilot Station precinct from an underutilised space into an asset for the community are one step closer," Mr Dawson said.

"This project is at the heart of what the Royalties for Regions program was designed for, to develop areas of Western Australia to support strong and vibrant regional communities."
